Woman found dead in Walmart parking lot; commissioner makes case for Shawnee Sports Complex expansion

Here's a roundup of headlines from other local and regional media.

Here’s what other regional news organizations are reporting:

  • Shooting Death: Police say a woman was shot and killed in a vehicle in the Nitro Walmart parking lot on Monday morning. Coworkers found Misty Williams, 40, of Dunbar, a Walmart employee, after she went on break and did not return, according to reports. Authorities arrested Eric Richmond, 54, of Charleston, who they say was in an on-again, off-again relationship with the victim. Prosecutors have charged Richmond with first-degree murder. (WOWK)

  • Sports Complex Expansion: After a successful run of recent sporting events at Dunbar’s Shawnee Sports Complex, one Kanawha County commissioner hopes the facility will expand to continue the growth of sports tourism in the area. “We need at least four more turf fields, so we’re looking at that now,” Commission President Ben Salango said Monday on WCHS Radio’s 580 Live program. During the recent West Virginia Futbol Club Capital Cup, organizers used additional fields outside the Shawnee facility to accommodate more than 200 soccer teams that came to the Kanawha Valley to participate. “There’s a way for us to actually keep more of that business here, and I think it probably would not be that expensive to do it,” Salango said. • Flood Mitigation: Kanawha County’s Stream and Culvert Mitigation Plan shows signs of progress in reducing flooding in certain areas. As part of the plan, officials tasked a group of workers with identifying and cleaning clogged culverts and ditches, which have historically contributed to flooding. Project enforcement officer Richard Ray said crews have corrected around 115 of 140 identified problems. The county continues to add cases to its database to identify problem areas before they become bigger issues. (WCHS)
