Preparations underway for weekend marathon; BOE OKs beer sales at Laidley

  • UC Marathon: West Virginia’s capital city is preparing for its first marathon in nearly three decades. The University of Charleston Marathon kicks off this weekend in Charleston, with competitions planned over two days. Some roadways will be closed at various times on Saturday and Sunday, which may affect local traffic. (Gazette-Mail)

  • Beer Sales: Members of the Kanawha County Board of Education have given their OK for beer to be sold at certain events at Laidley Field. The approval came in a 4-1 vote on Monday. Board member Joe Crawford voted against the measure. Sales would only be permitted for events not affiliated with the school district. The University of Charleston, which currently leases the stadium for certain sporting events, already sells beer at the facility. (WCHS Network)

  • DUI Crash: A 2025 Capital High School graduate and former member of the school’s baseball program is speaking out after being injured in a DUI-involved wreck last Thursday. Dean Kelly recounted the accident in which a drunk driver hit his vehicle head-on. “I thought I was paralyzed,” Kelly told local station WOWK in an interview from his hospital bed. “After impact, my whole dash was laying on my lap in my truck.” (WOWK)
