Hundreds of volunteers spent Labor Day helping communities across the Kanawha Valley through an annual day of service.
Labor of Love, an annual community service event sponsored by the University of Charleston, took place Monday, Sept. 7. Students, faculty, staff and coaches participated in service projects at locations throughout the region.
Several dozen service projects were spread out around the Kanawha Valley. Community initiatives included neighborhood cleanups, beautification projects, meal preparation, food distribution and other outreach efforts.
In a press release, a UC representative said the effort allows volunteers to meet local needs while strengthening connections with the communities they call home.
Volunteers began departing to their projects around 7 a.m., with a second group departing at 9:30 a.m. KRT provided transportation to some project locations around Charleston, according to organizers.
After completing their morning service projects, volunteers gathered on the university's riverbank lawn, where they were able to relax and enjoy games and other outdoor activities.
UC-Beckley students participated in projects organized by their program directors, while online students were encouraged to participate in community service wherever they live.
