People interested in a career in carpentry can now get a virtual look inside the Nitro Carpenter Technical Center through a new video tour released by the Carpenter Contractor Trust.
The interactive tour takes viewers through the center's classrooms, main shop floor and specialized training bays, explaining the skills taught at each area. The goal is to show prospective apprentices, construction partners and the public what training at the facility looks like.
“This video allows our partners and potential apprentices to have an up-close look at a first-class facility that is available for those who qualify, while removing any geographic obstacles,” CCT Executive Director Cyndie Williams said. “The Nitro Training Center will provide a career path to a carpentry career that will pay dividends for decades.”
The center emphasizes hands-on learning, with experienced instructors and mentors guiding apprentices as they develop their skills. The training also continues beyond an apprentice's graduation, as journey workers can return to the center throughout their careers for additional training.
The facility offers training in a broad range of construction specialties.
Apprentices can learn how to build concrete forms designed to withstand intense pressure, as well as flooring installation, including carpet, resilient wood laminates, sport surfaces and polished concrete.
The center also provides welding instruction, including training on safely joining metals and determining the proper material thickness and heat settings.
General carpentry and framing training covers work ranging from site layout and concrete forming to framing, finishing, hanging doors and installing trim.
The center also offers Infection Control Risk Assessment, or ICRA, training for carpenters working in hospitals and other medical facilities. The training focuses on procedures needed to safely perform construction work in health care settings.
Other training includes mill cabinet work, cabinetry and paneling, as well as interior and exterior systems. Carpenters can work on a project from the early stages of construction through finishing work, including framing walls, installing finishes, hanging doors and installing flooring and trim.
The virtual tour also highlights the broad role carpenters play on construction sites. According to the CCT, carpenters are often among the first workers to arrive at a job site and the last to leave, requiring training across multiple areas of construction.
The Nitro Technical Center was built to provide apprenticeship and continuing-education programs for carpenters and apprentices. Located in Nitro, the facility combines classroom instruction with hands-on shop training.
A CCT representative said the virtual tour is intended to give prospective apprentices a look at the equipment, facilities and work involved in a career in construction.
