T
he Charleston Police Department (CPD) has a new patrol officer. Brian Foster, a Charleston native, was sworn in during a ceremony on Monday, March 17.
"Patrolman Foster comes to us as a certified officer and will be on patrol immediately in the field training program," department representatives said in a social media post. "If you see him out, say hello and welcome him to our city."
Foster is the latest officer to join the capital city's police force, which numbers more than 160 sworn personnel, according to information on the department's website. CPD is headed by Chief Scott Dempsey, who was appointed by Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin over a year ago. Dempsey replaced former Chief James "Tyke" Hunt, who was granted retirement with a pension amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Foster will be employed by the police department's Patrol Division. The unit responds to a variety of calls, ranging from parking issues to violent crimes.
CPD continues to seek certified officers to join the city's police force, officials said. The department will hold hiring tests for certified officers on Thursday, March 20, and Saturday, April 19. Interested applicants are encouraged to call CPD's training division at 304-348-1091 for more information.
