Kanawha City resident Jessica Hudson was appointed to the Charleston City Council on Monday, filling the Ward 18 seat previously held by Pam Burka. Burka announced her resignation in a social media post on September 9, citing health issues.

Hudson was nominated and approved during Monday's council meeting and began serving immediately.
Hudson has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare finance, operations and strategy in the public and private sectors. She is a graduate of West Virginia State University.
Her career has included leadership roles with a West Virginia health care organization that grew from a startup into a statewide organization employing thousands of West Virginians. She also has worked in state government, supporting health care facilities and services across all 55 counties.
Hudson is transitioning into the position of chief financial officer for the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council. She also serves on the board of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.
Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said Hudson’s experience and ties to Kanawha City will be assets as she represents Ward 18.
“Jessica brings more than 20 years of experience in finance, operations, and strategic leadership, along with a strong connection to Kanawha City and the people who call it home,” Goodwin said.
Hudson said her family has lived in Kanawha City since 2003 and that she is looking forward to serving the community.
“Kanawha City has been home to my family for more than 20 years, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to a community that has given us so much,” Hudson said.
Hudson and her husband raised their two children, Chase and Ava, in Kanawha City. The family has been involved in recreational sports, church and other community activities.
