The annual Paula Martin Memorial Swimming Lessons are underway at the Kanawha City Community Center Pool, giving children and adults a chance to improve their swimming skills throughout the summer.
Now in its 14th year, the program honors Paula Martin, a longtime Charleston Parks and Recreation employee who spent more than three decades serving the community. Martin was a certified swim instructor and pool operator who promoted water safety and youth development during her career.
This year's lessons are taught by certified instructors Mary Leslie Morton and Julia Morton. Together, they bring more than 30 years of experience teaching swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
The program offers classes for beginner swimmers, parent-child participants, advanced swimmers and adults. Organizers allow participants to register for multiple sessions, and there is no limit to the number of morning or evening sessions they may attend.
Registration is available only at the pool. Online registration is not offered. Each three-class session costs $10.
Morning lessons take place at 10:30 a.m. for beginner swimmers and parent-child participants, followed by advanced swimmer and adult classes at 11:15 a.m.
Evening lessons begin at 6 p.m. for beginner swimmers and parent-child participants. Advanced swimmer and adult classes follow at 6:45 p.m.
Morning sessions are scheduled throughout June, July and August. Evening sessions also continue through the summer.
Organizers say the program welcomes everyone from first-time swimmers to those looking to strengthen existing skills. The lessons focus on helping participants gain confidence and improve safety in and around the water while learning in a supportive environment.
