Two people escape burning car in early morning crash near Dawes

No injuries reported in the wreck on I-77 in eastern Kanawha County.

wo people escaped a burning car in an early morning wreck on Interstate 77 in Kanawha County.

The crash, which happened in a southbound lane near Dawes, resulted from a tractor-trailer losing part of its load, officials said. A vehicle with two people crashed into the load, causing the car to catch on fire.

Metro 911 initially reported that the two individuals were trapped, but they were able to get out. They were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

Crews with the Cabin Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Pratt Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

"We were dealing with single-digit weather battling this fire and water was freezing shortly after touching the ground," a Pratt VFD representative said.

The road has since been reopened.
