eputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department are investigating after a man was shot early Tuesday morning in St. Albans.
According to a release, deputies responded to a call at the GoMart along MacCorkle Avenue around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday. Officers with the St. Albans Police Department also responded to the call.
Police say a 39-year-old man, who they assert is "homeless," was found with a gunshot wound to his upper left arm.
The unnamed victim told deputies he had just come from the area of Teays Hill Cemetery, about a mile west of the GoMart.
"[H]e had been walking from the Teays Hill Cemetery area and took a trail to West Main Street when he heard what sounded like a 'pop,'" deputies said in the release. "He didn’t realize he had been shot until he arrived at GoMart and called 911. He did not see or encounter anyone during his walk."
Police said they believe the victim was hit by birdshot pellets from a shotgun. The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
Officers are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Section at 304-357-0556.
