The Clay Center has named Rebecca Gillispie as its interim president and CEO as the organization begins a national search for a permanent successor to the late Al Najjar.
The Clay Center’s Board of Directors voted Thursday, Sept. 17, to elect Gillispie, who currently serves as the organization’s chief operating officer, to lead the organization during the transition.
Gillispie’s appointment follows the more than 11-year leadership tenure of Al Najjar, who died in August. Najjar served as the Clay Center’s president and CEO from March 1, 2015, until his death on Aug. 21, 2026. During his tenure, he led major renovations and community-focused initiatives that significantly increased engagement and nearly doubled attendance at the Charleston museum.
Gillispie has been part of the Clay Center’s leadership team since 2003, overseeing its operational and financial management. Before joining the Clay Center, she served as controller at the former Sunrise Museum.
“Rebecca has been such an important part of the Clay Center’s leadership team, and we’re grateful that she is willing to step into this role during this important transition,” Clay Center Board of Directors Chair Rob Aliff said. “Her knowledge of the organization, commitment to the mission, and close working relationship with Al over the years provide valuable continuity to our community as we move forward.”
Gillispie earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from West Virginia University. She will provide leadership and oversight of the Clay Center while the board conducts a comprehensive national search for the organization’s next permanent president and CEO.
