A private local university has been named the top college in West Virginia for the second year in a row.

The University of Charleston has been ranked number one in the state by Niche in its 2027 Best Colleges rankings.

Niche is an online platform that helps students and families research, rank, and review schools around the United States.

UC received high marks in academics, professors, campus food, athletics and overall student life. The university also rated highly in categories including dorms, safety and diversity.

The ranking marks the second consecutive year UC has been named the best college in West Virginia by Niche.

“Being recognized as the best college in West Virginia two years in a row is a tremendous honor for our entire community,” UC President Marty Roth said. “What makes this recognition especially rewarding is that it is driven largely by student and alumni feedback.”

Roth said the university aims to provide students with the support, opportunities and resources needed to succeed during their college careers.

The Niche rankings are based on academic, admissions, financial and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education, along with millions of reviews from students and alumni.

“Everything we do begins with student success,” said Virginia Moore, vice president and dean of students. “We believe every student has the potential to thrive at UC.”

Moore said the university works to create an environment where students feel welcome, have access to support and have opportunities to connect and grow.

Niche evaluates colleges and universities to help prospective students and their families compare schools based on factors including academic goals, personal values, budgets and campus preferences.

UC Student Government Association President Connor McKown said the ranking reflects both the university’s academic offerings and its campus community.

“As a student, I experience firsthand the ways UC sets us up for success,” McKown said. “This ranking reflects not just the academics but the strong community that makes UC a place where students truly belong and thrive.”
