VU Medicine Thomas Hospitals, part of the WVU Medicine Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI), has earned the highest 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), also known as heart bypass surgery.
This prestigious distinction places Thomas Hospitals among the top-performing heart surgery programs in the nation for quality and patient outcomes. The STS star rating system is the most widely recognized and respected benchmark for cardiac surgery, evaluating programs based on risk-adjusted outcomes including mortality, complications, and adherence to evidence-based care.
The recognition is part of a broader achievement across the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute network, which received top ratings in multiple categories of adult cardiac surgery. Thomas Hospitals’ 3-star rating highlights its commitment to delivering high-quality cardiovascular care close to home for patients in southern West Virginia.
“This recognition reflects the dedication and expertise of our entire cardiac care team, including our excellent cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr. Nestor Dans and Dr. Nathaniel Kister,” Greg Rosencrance, M.D., president and CEO of WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals, said. “We are proud to provide advanced heart care right here in our community, ensuring patients have access to excellent outcomes without having to travel far.”
The 3-star rating—the highest possible from STS—is reserved for elite programs that demonstrate exceptional performance. Achieving this designation underscores Thomas Hospitals’ focus on clinical excellence, patient safety, and coordinated, team-based care.
As part of the WVU Medicine Heart and Vascular Institute, Thomas Hospitals is connected to a statewide network of cardiovascular specialists, offering patients access to advanced treatments, innovative procedures, and comprehensive heart care services.
