Local transportation agency offers free election day rides

KRT is providing a fare-free day for bus line and KRTplus services on Tuesday, May 12.

T

he Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT) is offering free rides on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to ensure local citizens have a way to get to the polls.

According to a press release, the free rides are available on both the regular bus lines, as well as the on-demand KRTplus service.

"Every ride is free, not just trips to polling places, as part of our commitment to supporting voter participation in our community," officials wrote in a statement.

Officials said that riders who have previously booked a ride for election day in advance of May 12 and were already charged would be refunded for any payment already made.

KRT offers public transportation services each Monday through Saturday in various locations throughout Kanawha County. The agency's KRTplus program offers on-demand service in six metro zones (West Charleston, East Charleston, South Hills, Southridge, Kanawha City and South Charleston) each Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

More information on the free election day rides and other KRT services is available by calling 304-343-7586 or by visiting rideonkrt.com.
