The City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department is once again offering free morning yoga classes at Magic Island this summer.

The department announced the return of Magic Island Morning Yoga, led by instructor Debora Mattingly, RYT, with Paula Bickham. The program, now in its 18th year, invites residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels to participate in weekly sessions along the Kanawha River.

Classes will begin June 2 and continue every Tuesday in June and July from 6 to 7 a.m. at Magic Island, located at 101 Kanawha Blvd. W. The sessions are weather permitting.

Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, water and comfortable clothing. Organizers also recommend bringing a towel or blanket to place beneath a mat because of early morning dew.

“Magic Island Morning Yoga has become one of those summer traditions people look forward to year after year,” Dax Miller, director of the City of Charleston Parks and Recreation Department, said in a statement. “There’s something special about gathering along the river early in the morning, moving together, and starting the day in a positive way. It’s welcoming, relaxing, and a great reminder of how our parks can bring people together.”
