I

t's Tuesday, April 15. Here's the latest from communities around the Kanawha Valley.

Demolition: Officials with the Building and Zoning Department in St. Albans say the city continues with its effort to demolish dilapidated structures within the municipality. “To date, we’ve successfully removed over 40 dilapidated structures throughout St. Albans,” Marshall Chaney, head of St. Albans’ Building and Zoning, said in a statement. Chaney said the razings are “cleaning up our neighborhoods and improving the safety and appearance of our community.” He said only eight structures remain to be demolished. “I will continue working through the proper channels to resolve the remaining cases — including those where cooperation has been a challenge,” Chaney notes.

Youth Jobs: Do you know someone aged 16-20 looking for a summer job? The City of Charleston is now accepting applications for the Mayor's Summer Youth Jobs Program. “The Mayor’s Summer Youth Jobs Program empowers our young people to explore their interests, develop leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, and grow both professionally and personally – all while making a positive impact on our community,” Charleston Mayor Amy Schuler Goodwin said in a release announcing the program. Jobs in the program span various city departments, ranging from public grounds, facilities, HR, Public Art, parking and more. The pay rate is $12 per hour, up to 35 hours per week. Applications must be received by Friday, April 25. The program runs from June 2 through Aug. 8. More information and a link to jobs is available on the city’s Facebook page.

Art in the Park: River Valley Arts will once again host their Art in the Park spring celebration on Saturday, May 3 in Montgomery. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Lee Street. Art and craft vendors will offer items for sale and hot dogs will be available for purchase.
