On Wednesday, Feb. 18, officials with the Kanawha County Commission and the city of Charleston announced $7 million in federal funds had been secured for the long-awaited (but still unbuilt) Capital Sports Center.

The monies, which come from Congressionally Directed Spending, were secured in part by U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who was on hand for Wednesday's announcement.

"This will be a multi-year process," officials said in an online post announcing the funding. "But these funds will help propel the project forward. City and county leaders will continue talks with architects, planners, construction and [Town Center] Mall owners. This is an investment in physical and mental health for the community."

According to building plans, the center will include three floors of athletic facilities. Dining, fitness and administrative spaces are also included in the design, but plans for a swimming pool have been scrapped.
